Painting warranties, explained
What a painting warranty really covers, the difference between workmanship and manufacturer cover, and why it has to be in writing.
Short answer: a real warranty is in writing, names what it covers and for how long, and is backed by a painter who is still contactable. Anything less is a promise, not a warranty.
The two warranties that matter
A proper coastal repaint carries two. The workmanship warranty is the painter guaranteeing the prep and application. The manufacturer system warranty is the paint company guaranteeing the product, which only stands if the system was applied to specification. You want both, and you want them in writing.
Before you sign
- Ask for the warranty in writing, with the term and what it covers.
- Check the painter will still be reachable in a few years.
- Confirm the system was applied to the manufacturer specification.
Good sign
A written workmanship warranty with a clear term, plus a named accredited system, means both the painter and the manufacturer are standing behind the job.
Red flag
"Ten year warranty" said out loud but absent from the quote is worth nothing. If it is not written down, it does not exist.
Why the coast makes the warranty matter more
Inland, a weak system might last long enough to look fine. On a sea-facing Gold Coast wall it will not, and that is exactly when a warranty earns its keep. A ten year written workmanship warranty is only a fair thing to offer if the prep and system were right in the first place, which is why we treat the warranty as the last line of the same job, not a marketing add-on.
Common questions
What does a painting warranty actually cover?
A workmanship warranty covers the application: if the paint blisters, peels or chalks because of how it was prepped or applied, the painter comes back and makes it right. It does not cover damage you cause or normal wear.
Is a verbal warranty worth anything?
In practice, no. A warranty you cannot produce in writing is a warranty you cannot enforce. Ask for it on paper, with what it covers and for how long clearly stated.
What is the difference between workmanship and manufacturer warranty?
The workmanship warranty is the painter standing behind how the job was done. The manufacturer warranty is the paint company standing behind the product, and it usually only applies if the system was applied to specification.
